“America is at a crossroads. It’s time to hold ICE accountable.”
OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Today in an Op-Ed published in the Omaha World-Herald, Denise Powell called for accountability for ICE, the impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, and for Congress to finally deliver on comprehensive immigration reform:
“My parents taught me to believe in America’s promise. They showed me what it means to build a life from nothing and give back to the community that gave you so much. They also taught me to always speak up in the face of injustice.
Our children are watching us to see how we will fight for the country they deserve. America is at a crossroads. We can either be the country that lives up to the vision and hopes of our Constitution, or one that falls into an authoritarian regime. I know which side I’m on.
If we want the American promise to mean something, now is the time to fight for it.”
Powell was the first candidate to call for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s impeachment, weeks ago, after Renee Good was killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis. Powell joined protestors in Omaha over the weekend after Alex Pretti was killed and initiated a call for action from Nebraskans that generated messages demanding accountability for ICE to Rep. Don Bacon, Senator Pete Ricketts, and Senator Deb Fischer.
Powell is running in one of the most competitive House races in the country that has been slated as a “Leans Democrat” district by national race raters. As the frontrunner in the Democratic primary, she has outraised all of her opponents and has the support of more than 50 local and national elected leaders and organizations. In a time when America desperately needs it, Powell is stepping up to bring stability, compassion, accountability, and practical leadership to the district.
About Denise
Denise Powell is a mom, former executive, small business owner, public school champion and healthcare advocate who knows that a strong work ethic and a love of family and community is the Nebraska way of life. She also knows the Good Life is getting harder to come by. It’s why after Trump’s election she left a successful career in corporate America to focus on fighting for what makes Nebraska such a special place to live and raise a family. Over the past decade, she has supported hundreds of Nebraskans running for local office, protected our public schools and the families they serve, and helped stop extremists from passing abortion bans in the state.
Every day, we see more of our friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while Donald Trump and MAGA extremists are focused on trade wars that are increasing our cost of living and passing massive tax breaks for billionaires. Strong families, strong businesses, strong communities – they ALL require work and investment, but everything we’ve fought for here at home is under threat. From dismantling Medicaid and making it harder for seniors to get the benefits they’ve earned, to dismantling education, from the University of Nebraska to our public schools, to attacking our veterans and ripping away women’s rights — Denise is running to fight for the people of Nebraska. We don’t need lip service from politicians, we need action.
