“I’d be the first Latina, the first person of color, to ever serve in federal office in Nebraska.”
Omaha, NE – After winning the Democratic primary in Nebraska’s Second Congressional District, congressional candidate Denise Powell appeared on CNN to discuss her historic victory, the stakes of the November general election, and why Nebraska’s Blue Dot is one of the top flip opportunities for Democrats in the country.

“Voters are ready for some change here,” Powell said on CNN. “People in this district are really, really fired up. They are frustrated by an administration that is breaking its promises, and everyone in my community is really struggling right now. I hear it every day from families, farmers, veterans, and seniors. Folks in this state deserve better, and I think they’re ready for fresh leadership.”
Powell also addressed the open seat left by outgoing Congressman Don Bacon, expressing respect for his willingness to push back against Trump and work across the aisle — qualities she said she hopes to emulate. “I want to be the kind of leader that is focused more on getting things done for the people of this state than in scoring political points,” she said.
On Democratic turnout and party unity heading into November, Powell was optimistic — pointing to record youth voter registration at local high schools, where students waited up to two and a half hours in line to register to vote. “People know that Nebraska 2 is one of the top flip opportunities for Democrats in the country right now,” she said. “I think there’s going to be some really, really good momentum as we get to November.”
“This is a race that can tip the scales of which party controls Congress,” said Powell. “I’m proud to have earned this opportunity, and I’m ready to fight like hell for Nebraska.”
About Denise
Denise Powell is a mom, former executive, small business owner, public school champion and healthcare advocate who knows that a strong work ethic and a love of family and community is the Nebraska way of life. She also knows the Good Life is getting harder to come by. It’s why after Trump’s election she left a successful career in corporate America to focus on fighting for what makes Nebraska such a special place to live and raise a family. Over the past decade, she has supported hundreds of Nebraskans running for local office, protected our public schools and the families they serve, and helped stop extremists from passing abortion bans in the state.
Every day, we see more of our friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while Donald Trump and MAGA extremists are focused on trade wars that are increasing our cost of living and passing massive tax breaks for billionaires like Elon Musk. Strong families, strong businesses, strong communities – they ALL require work and investment, but everything we’ve fought for here at home is under threat. From dismantling Medicaid and making it harder for seniors to get the benefits they’ve earned, to dismantling education, from the University of Nebraska to our public schools, to attacking our veterans and ripping away women’s rights — Denise is running to fight for the people of Nebraska. We don’t need lip service from politicians, we need action.
