Omaha, NE – Following the events involving ICE this week, Denise Powell has issued the following statement:
“This week the world witnessed another horrific example of ICE’s abuse of power. And I am appalled by President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem’s responses to the fatal shooting.
Today I urge Congressional action, including the impeachment and removal of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Secretary Noem has used her office to terrorize and intimidate communities while blatantly ignoring the rule of law. And when confronted with the facts, Secretary Noem has refused to take accountability for the failures of the agency she was tasked with leading and has instead actively worked to mislead the American people while continuing to act dangerously and with impunity.
As if that wasn’t egregious enough, there have also been concerning reports of corruption and the misuse of taxpayer dollars, including steering hundreds of millions in contracts to her friends.
I have enormous respect for the members of law enforcement who put their lives on the line to protect and serve our communities. I also believe that these agencies must be held to a high standard, starting with those at the very top. Secretary Noem has undermined the country’s trust in DHS, and has failed to take action to protect the lives of our neighbors and make our communities safer.
No one is above the law, and this is especially true of leaders who use their office to inflict fear and harm to the very people they were trusted to serve.”
